Drum Roll Please ……………….
I am pleased to announce the recipients of the 2018 ARRL Hudson Division
Awards. There were many worthy individuals nominated by their peers.
These three are our stand-outs this year.
Amateur of the Year goes to John Hale KD2LPM for his work incorporating
radio into a STEM curriculum for his middle school science classes.
Working with the Hall of Science Amateur Radio Club, of which he is
Secretary, he has constructed an all-band, all-mode station using
donated equipment. Adding to the educational aspect, he and his students
work with SKYWARN and the National Weather Service. And to be young
with stamina, they also are involved with the National Traffic System as
active members who also provided messaging service to Puerto Rico in the
aftermath of Hurricane Maria. And this just scratches the surface of
what they’re capable of.
An elmer’s elmer, Grand Ole Ham awardee Julian Blair, Sr. WA2WMJ,
affectionately known as JB, has helped more hams over his years in
amateur radio then he can remember. Every entry made by someone
nominating him for this award mentioned the help he has provided to them
over the years. He constantly sets an example of what an elmer should
be. In fact, he defines “elmer.”
The “Technical Achievement Award” goes to Mr. Mesh, J. Gordon Beattie W2TTT. His
work VHF/UHF/Microwave weak signal work, in particular, his award
winning work with the Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network (AREDN) mesh
high-speed data networks, is unparalleled. His many years of experience
working at Bell Labs developing 74 patents, some finding their way into
Amateur Radio. In helping to develop mesh he has also branched out to
taking that work and applying it to public service emergency
communications. His lectures on the topic are many and can be found on
