UPDATE August 1, 2014

It’s been a busy few weeks for me, so let me bring you up to date.
As you know, and many attended, we held the ARRL Centennial National
Convention in Hartford last month.  The event was a huge success and I
was kept extremely busy during the Convention.  I was on the Convention
steering committee, meeting monthly at HQ, and then running around
during the 3 ½ days helping to keep things flowing.  I had a great
time, met thousands of people, and was thoroughly exhausted afterwards.
No rest for the weary as the July ARRL Board meeting was held beginning
that Sunday as the last tours of HQ were finishing up.

The Board meeting was relatively quiet.  The minute are now available
online.  Some by-law amendments were referred to the Executive
Committee (of which I am a member), a policy statement for Emergency
Communications was passed as was a policy statement regarding Logbook
of the World.  No fires started but some firecrackers did make noise.

Awards Luncheon & Revitalized Hudson Division website

The luncheon is proceeding well.  Richie Cetron, K2KNB, is spearheading
the effort on behalf of the sponsoring club, LIMARC.  We have extended
the nomination period until August 15.  Please go to the Hudson
Division website for nomination forms, as well as ticket sales forms
and advertising forms.

Richie has also revitalized the dormant website.  We will now be
listing hamfests and club events on the website, so please send him all
the information you’d like publicized.  I will also publicize most
club events, as I always have, in the Weekend Update emails I send out,
so please cc me on club events.

On to the BIG ITEM.  HR-4969

In June I went down to D.C. to meet with staffers and Representatives
regarding HR 4969, “The Amateur Radio Parity Act of 2014.”  I met
with 6 offices in one day and had 5 very good meetings. This past week
I was in D.C. for two days of meetings, which also went well.  So far,
of all the meetings I’ve had, 7 of the 17 co-sponsors come from
meetings I’ve had.  Not too shabby.  The list of co-sponsors as of
today can be found at the end of this email.

This month the House of Representatives is in recess.  That means that
we can access our representatives in their home districts.  In New
Jersey, we have Leonard Lance (NJ 7) on board.  I had meetings with
high-level staffers in the following offices: Bill Pascrell (NJ 9) and
Donald Payne (NJ 10), both of whom are in our Division.  I also met
with some folks a little to the south: Frank LoBiondo (NJ 2) and Jon
Runyan (NJ 3).

We had excellent success in NY.  On board in NY: Steve Israel (NY 3),
Carolyn McCarthy (NY 4), Michael Grimm (NY 11), Chris Gibson (NY 19),
Richard Hana (NY 22), and Tom Reed (NY 23).  I also met with staffers
from Timothy Bishop (NY 1), Peter King (NY 2), and Gregory Meeks (NY
5).   A group of us locally in ENY had met with Paul Tonko’s (NY 20)
office some time ago.  I’m told that our request is in the que.
We’re awaiting a positive reply soon.

I can’t do this alone.  I need your help.

Since they’re home, let’s get some of them to sign on.  In NJ, your
representatives are: Chris Smith, Scott Garrett, Frank Pallone, Albio
Sires, Bill Pascrell, Donald Payne, Rodney Frelinghuysen, and Rush Holt
(we already have Leonard Lance on board).  Bill Hudzik will be seeing
Rodney Frelinghuysen, so let’s try to see the others.

In NY, let’s try to get to: Tim Bishop (NY 1), Pete King (NY 2),
Grace Meng (NY 6), Nydia Velazques (NY 7), Hakeem Jeffries (NY 8),
Yvette Clarke (NY 9), Jerrold Nadler (NY 10),  Carolyn Maloney (NY 12),
Charles Rangel (NY 13), Joe Crowley (NY 14), Jose Serrano (NY 15), Eliot
Engel (NY 16), Nita Lowey (NY 17), Sean Maloney (NY 18), and William
Owens (NY 21).

Write emails to your representatives using the template I sent out.
And write hard-copy letters using the template the ARRL has on the
website (Click on the link to HR 4969 on the homepage) and mail them to
the ARRL as instructed.

If your Representative has already signed on to the Bill, please send
them a short thank you email using their website.  Let them know you
are a licensed Amateur Radio operator, a constituent, and simply say
thank you for supporting HR-4969.

And most important, if you know any representatives or their staffers
please let me know asap so that we can try to arrange a meeting to
speak to them about HR 4969.  We need to do this together.  And we need
to do it now!

Tnx es 73 de Mike N2YBB
