I want to bring you up to date on what is happening on the HR-4969
Congress goes back into session next week. During the month of August,
while Congress was in recess, efforts were made on numerous fronts to
try to get appointments to speak directly with our Congressional
representatives. In all instances it was very difficult to get
appointments, and in most instances it proved to be impossible as most
were away from their Districts on either business or vacation. The same
held true with senior staff members who happened to be local during the
I met personally with Elliot Engel (D-NY 16), Jon Runyan (R-NJ 3),
Peter King (R-NY2) and Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-NJ 11). These meetings
also included the participation of a number of hams who were
constituents of these legislators. Without their help, we would not be
as successful as we’ve been.
Although we still don’t have an answer from Mr. Runyan, we are hopeful
that the work done by his constituents; Chris Cannatella KC2GNQ and
John Kafka KB2BAA will be the impetus for his joining on.
The work done by Jim Mezey W2KFV, George Tranos N2GA, and Mike Mazzola
KC2OLA were the reason we got Mr. King to agree to co-sponsor the
And the fact that Carver Washburn W2TFM and Bill Hudzik W2UDT (Vice
Director) both personally know Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-NJ 11) was
doubtless why we got a meeting and what put him into the HR-4969 camp
I want to thank all of these fine people for the immeasurable help
they’ve been to the cause!
I’d also like to thank the many hams in the Hudson Division who reached
out to their representatives in an effort to schedule appointments,
albeit unsuccessfully. The fact is that even without a sit down
meeting you also make our Congressional delegation aware of Amateur
Radio and of our plight.
I will be returning to D.C. on the 15th to continue the work we started
in June. We now have 24 legislators committed to HR-4969, 10 of whom
come from our work. I see no reason why we shouldn’t have 40 or 50
co-sponsors if we put our minds to it.
I will update you after I return from Washington. In the interim,
let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope that the good work we do as
Amateur Radio operators is noticed.
