NYC ARES/RACES will provide communications support tovarious agencies during commemorative services and events. In addition,ARRL President Jim Haynie, W5JBP, has been invited to address a globalrepeater linkup the evening of September 11. And, special event stationsare set to be on the air from New York City and from Washington, DC, tocommemorate the occasion. "The callout is expected to last well over 15 hours and will be handledin two shifts," said NYC ARES/RACES Public Information Officer MarkPhillips, KC2ENI/G7LTT. "As security is incredibly tight, we have had toenter into special negotiations with the Secret Service, the FBI, theNYPD and the Port Authority Police Department as well as with the servedagencies to allow us to bring in our radio equipment." Some 30 NYC ARES/RACES members will be deployed across the Greater NewYork City area to support the American Red Cross, The Salvation Army, the New York City Office of Emergency Management and other agencies.Phillips says participating ARES/RACES members underwent scrutiny fromthe US Secret Service and have been briefed at length by the Red Cross. One year ago, ARES teams--most of them fromNew York City, Long Island and New Jersey--supported the same agenciesduring the response to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. ARRL New York City District Emergency Coordinator and RACES OfficerCharles Hargrove, N2NOV, expressed heartfelt thanks to all amateurscoming to NYC to help. "With the chance to train and practice made evenmore available to the average ham these days, please join your localARES group and put into practice what you learn," he said. "Yourcommunity will thank you for it when the need truly arises, as we sawlast September 11. Without practice, we would have a tougher time ofit." The NYC ARES/RACES activation on the first anniversary of the terroristattacks will honor the memories of the amateurs who lost their lives inthe collapse of the World Trade Center's twin towers and the othervictims. Amateurs who died included Steve Jacobson, N23SJ; BillSteckman, WA2ACW; Michael Jacobs, AA1GO; Bob Cirri Sr, KA2OTD; RodCoppola, KA2KET, and Winston Grant, KA2DRF. Additionally, Bill Ruth,W3HRD, died in the Pentagon attack. Phillips said that since many of the manned sites are within what hetermed the Ground Zero "frozen zone" in the general Wall Street area, operators will need more than just a hand-held radio to access localrepeaters. Since vehicles will not be allowed into the area, "portableField Day-type stations are required," he said. President Haynie is scheduled to address a massive repeater linkup thathopes to span the globe. "I plan to thank all the hams who spentthousands of hours volunteering their time on September 11," Hayniesaid. "They again demonstrated the power of Amateur Radio in times ofneed." Haynie also said he wants to again acknowledge the hundreds ofsupportive messages from International Amateur Radio Union (IARU)member-societies that arrived in the wake of the attacks last year."That, to me, was quite touching," he added. The effort, called the Commemorative 9/11 Net, is being spearheaded byLen Signoretti, N2LEN, of Brooklyn, New York. N2LEN's 440.050 MHz (CTCSS114.8 Hz) internet-linked repeater covers the Greater New York Cityarea. The linkup will rely on either EchoLink or eQSO Internet softwareconnections. Signoretti said his UHF machine is used as a central hub tocoordinate EchoLink and eQSO, so users on each can communicate. The netwill attempt to interconnect repeaters in all 50 US states as well as inmany other countries around the world. "The idea of the 9/11 Commemorative came weeks ago from several e-mailsI received from Internet linking users," Signoretti said. "Due to themagnitude of users that will probably participate, new software has beenwritten to allow us to combine conference rooms together to increase theInternet bandwidth across both systems." He explains that there will beone main net control operator and several "sub net" control operators toassist with check-in volume. But, he added, all servers will be ableto communicate with each other. Signoretti said he hopes everything runs smoothly. "I honestly don'tthink that there is a better way of having this many amateurs gettingtogether to commemorate the heroes of September 11 and the days after,"he added. Hargrove said he has submitted some data and audio files for use on thenet on behalf of the NYC ARES/RACES members who will be busy during theremembrance day activation. Amateurs can download free EchoLink or eQSO software from the Internet. While there is no listen-only capability on the Internet, many local VHFand UHF repeaters are expected to take part in the commemorative linkup. The Commemorative 9/11 Net is scheduled to get under way at 8 PM EasternDaylight Time (0000 UTC September 12) on the EchoLink and eQSO serversand could run as long as two hours. Haynie is scheduled to address thecyberspace and RF-linked gathering at around 9 PM EDT. The servers will be open at 6 AM EDT for stations that would like toconnect for the day. For more information, contact Len Signoretti,N2LEN, n2len1@aol.com. Special Event Stations John Nistico, NY6DX, has announced plans to operate a special eventstation starting at 0000 UTC September 11. "I will be operating W2002WTCspecial event station in memory of all those lost on September 11,2001," Nistico said. To comply with FCC rules, he will append "W2002WTC"to his legally assigned call sign. Nistico will operate from the GreaterNew York City area from September 11 until September 19. From September20 until September 22, Nistico said he plans to run his special eventfrom the vicinity of Ground Zero in New York, "thanks to MayorBloomberg." Operation will be on 160-10meters, SSB only from September 11 until September 19, and 40-10 metersthereafter. QSL requests go to NY6DX. According to ARRL New York City-Long Island Public InformationCoordinator Diane Ortiz, K2DO, Nistico was among the amateurs whoresponded during the first few days of the World Trade Center disasterand spent several days at a school near Ground Zero. In the Washington, DC, area, Deanna Lutz, K7DID, reports that specialevent station K4P will operate from the Pentagon starting 0400 UTCWednesday, September 11 through 0400 UTC Thursday, September 12, to markthe first anniversary of the terrorist attack. "Given the addedsecurity restrictions on that day, only a handful of us will be activethere, however," Lutz said. K4P also will operate from other sites inthe Washington, DC, area. Try contacting Tony Ricicki, W2VRK ofSomerset, NJ who has been acquiring and documenting cards from thepioneer and Depression eras during the past several years. Many OldTimer NJ hams move or become Silent Keys and their collections arethrown away. Preserving these QSLs is important because they containhistoric information about the operating activities and equipment ofthis long ago period. Tony is actively collecting and documenting NJ QSLcards from the pre WW2 era. It's his way of trying to preserve some ofthe early ham radio history of the state and keeping an archive forreference is a tribute to all the pioneer and "Depression" era hams. As he points out, "During the past few years I have received severalrequests from various relatives of hams asking if I had a card from agrandfather, father, uncle, etc in my collection so they could obtain acopy. They all seem to really appreciate these keepsakes."
